American percussionist and recording artist Wey Simba continues his Djembe Haus series with “Djembe Haus 9,” a project built around the djembe as the central voice in the music rather than a supporting instrument.
The sound combines African-rooted rhythms with electronic production, house and hip-hop influences. The percussion drives the arrangements, with the djembe providing the rhythmic foundation for experimentation across contemporary genres.
Simba began playing drums at age nine and has worked as a percussionist and instructor, alongside repairing and building drums. He is the founder of Haus of Percussion and its entertainment subsidiary, Haus of Percussion Entertainment, through which he develops his recording projects.
His work also includes Drums Power Unity (DPU), a community initiative that introduces participants to drum construction, craftsmanship, history and musical techniques. These activities reflect his broader focus on percussion as both a musical practice and a means of bringing people together.
“Djembe Haus 9” continues Simba’s exploration of how traditional drumming can be incorporated into contemporary music while retaining the djembe’s distinctive rhythmic character.
The project is available on streaming platforms.
