Australian band Extra Time has shared the video for the “The Town Where Time Stood Still” the final song off their aptly named 2024 album Songs with Extra Long Titles.
The R&B and soul-infused jazz track was inspired by band member Brendan McNamara’s 2021 family holiday to the seaside holiday town of Brunswick Heads in northern New South Wales in Australia but is also meant to “describe that feeling that a song gives you when it takes you back to the time and the place where you first heard it.”
“Visiting Brunswick Heads took me back in time to my childhood and all the things that made summer vacations great hence the line:Its always summer,” Brandon shares. “And your dreams can come true”
“The place is crazy busy for a summer seaside town, ridiculous traffic, hard to park, overpriced food of very variable quality with insanely expensive accommodation.”
While shopping for strings at a local music store with his daughter, the owner mentioned a vintage store to the singer who googled them and found out about fan fret Rickenbacker 481 the store had for sale.
Though he didn’t need the guitar, he set off in search of the store accompanied by his daughter, falling in love with the city nicknamed Brunswick Heads or Brunz by locals
Some of most memorable landmarks described by Brendon include an old Memorial Hall which he says would be “great for a gig” a tiny library which posts Word of The Day signs each day and a refurbished 1930’s cinema that featured a local choir singing Russian folk songs called Dusty Esky and a video store that still rents VHS.
The guitar was sold out by the time they got to the sore but Brenden ended up falling in love with the town which reminded him of his childhood summer holidays.
