OY explores colonialism and African unity on “Ubuntu (Fortress Europe Will Fall)”

Berlin-based duo OY have released “Ubuntu (Fortress Europe Will Fall),” the second single from their upcoming album Messages From Walls, scheduled for February 5, 2027.

Released on October 30, 2026, through Compost Records, the track draws on the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which emphasises shared humanity and community. It addresses colonialism, wealth inequality and migration, examining the historical and economic structures behind the movement of people from the Global South to Europe.

The song was inspired by a protest message written on a wall in Venice, Italy. Its lyrics and musical arrangement contrast the effects of colonial exploitation with the idea of collective responsibility, while a driving bass line and electronic production shape the track’s sound.

“Ubuntu (Fortress Europe Will Fall)” features vocals by Joy Frempong, who makes up OY alongside Swiss musician and producer Melodydreamer. The duo’s music draws from electronica, Afrobeats, avant-pop and jazz, often incorporating political and personal themes.

The accompanying music video was directed by Los Angeles-based visual artist Shiro Fujioka, also known as Ancestral Intelligence. Built around a story developed by OY, the video follows young people from the Global North and South who work together to recover wealth from a Western banking system. Its imagery also references the displacement of African cultural artefacts in Western museums.

The upcoming album Messages From Walls is built around street art, poetry and political messages collected by the duo in cities they visited while touring. Frempong and Melodydreamer developed the material into songs using a mobile recording studio.

The project follows OY’s 2023 album World Wide We and continues the duo’s exploration of cultural identity and social issues through electronic and experimental music.

“Ubuntu (Fortress Europe Will Fall)” is available on streaming platforms.
