Dray blends confessional rap and Afro-fusion on “stupidity”

DRAY has released “Stupidity,” the opening track and lead single from his debut EP, Reflection.

The London-based artist, who is from Lagos, describes the sound as “Afro-Reflection,” combining confessional rap with Afro-fusion. The song examines the desire for validation, addiction, isolation within the diaspora and the experience of pursuing music without support from the people closest to you.

At the centre of “Stupidity” is a question about seeking approval from people who may not understand or appreciate what you are doing: whether continuing to look for that validation is foolishness or a way of coping.

The song is performed in English and Nigerian Pidgin and introduces the themes explored across Reflection.

“Stupidity” is the first release from DRAY’s debut EP.

The track is now available on streaming platforms.

DRAY Celebrates Black Beauty and Intelligence on New Single “African Girl”

UK-based Nigerian artist DRAY, also known as Dr. Ayotunde Dawodu, has released his latest single, “African Girl,” a track that celebrates the beauty, confidence, and intelligence of African women.

Blending Afro-rap, Afrobeats, and Amapiano influences, the song combines energetic rhythms with lyrics that challenge stereotypes and highlight the achievements and individuality of modern African women.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, DRAY said he wanted to create a tribute to African women that recognizes both their ambition and cultural identity while expanding conventional ideas of beauty and success.

“I wanted to honor the intelligence, the stride, and the unapologetic nature of African women. This track celebrates their power, from their ambition to their cultural roots, and challenges narrow views of beauty and success. It’s a tribute to the baddie who also washes her own dishes.”

Outside music, DRAY is a Senior Lecturer in Building Engineering at the University of Greenwich. Holding a PhD in Energy Technologies and Sustainable Development, he has authored three books and more than 40 academic publications. His unique combination of academic and creative pursuits has earned him the nickname “The Vain Professor.”

“African Girl” serves as the lead single from DRAY’s forthcoming EP, scheduled for release later this month ahead of his debut album, Crossroads, which is expected in 2027.

“African Girl” by Dray is available now on major streaming platforms.
